Per the Post, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told reporters that an "individual laid in wait for our judge" in what "was an ambush and an attempted murder on our judge". A second suspect was seen being taken into custody by police.

Bruzzese hears general and domestic relations cases as one of two judges serving in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court.

Mavromatis said Bruzzese was Lifeflighted to a Pittsburgh-area hospital in stable condition. They are waiting to release his identity until his next of kin is notified.

Sheriff Abdalla says the suspects waited inside the auto, even driving away and coming back, in order to wait for the victim.

However, Hanlin said authorities still did not know what might have motivated Monday's shooting.

Of note, at the time of the shooting, Bruzzese was exiting in an alleyway by the courthouse.

Mavromatis said both men had criminal records and "one may have" appeared before Bruzzese. Once the bullet slugs are removed from the body, it will be determined who shot the suspect.

A judge in OH underwent surgery after he was shot in an ambush-style attack outside a courthouse this morning, authorities said.

The suspect's body could be seen lying next to a vehicle at a neighboring bank drive-thru. It's unclear how many shots the probation officer fired.

The passenger allegedly told police that he and Richmond had been drinking the night before and that he had only been told that Richmond had to be at court early in the morning.

The shooting has led to commentators on the web speculating Judge Bruzzese was likely acutely aware of the dangers of his judicial role and had made a habit of arming himself.

Bruzzese, 65, was talking after being wounded, Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis told WTOV-TV.
