Murray pulls out of US Open due to hip injury

Thirty-year-old Murray joins 12-times grand slam victor Novak Djokovic and 2016 U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka in missing the tournament through injury.

There were reports of Murray still showing a limp during practice in NY this week, and the Scot will give the first update about his fitness at a press conference on Saturday. The problem was still evident during the grass season, and Murray lost in the first round of the Aegon Championships, where he was defending champion.

Serious doubt remains, however, about the state of Murray's hip, which so troubled him at Wimbledon and contributed to a quarter-final exit.

"Had the issue with the hip over what's actually been since my match with Stan in Paris", Murray, 30, told reporters in a previously scheduled news conference. That bottom part of the draw is a little bit more open there. "Now I'm looking to build on that". Tried obviously, resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready here. "Unfortunately, I won't be playing here this year". Murray said he had hoped that his time off this summer-he hadn't played since.

Even Roger Federer finds it all a little surprising.

He went on to reassure the media that he had not taken any chances by trying to prepare for the tournament. "Is normal that we are still playing, we try our best, but it's normal that we have more troubles during this".

Great Britain Davis Cup captain Smith can not understand such thinking, telling Press Association Sport: "If you look at Andy, how many times has he ever retired from matches?"

"I don't think the tour is doing much wrong, to be quite honest", he said of the ATP schedule, which runs from January to November.

Dad charged after girl, 3, found shot dead
According to reports, a man inside the house was heard screaming that a child was dead and that she had shot herself. A DAD of a three-year-old girl found dead of a gunshot wound to the neck has been charged with firearm offences.

He remained uncertain what the prognosis would be, or the treatment that may be required.

"I spoke to a number of specialists about it to get the best advice possible", Murray said. That's something that I'll sit down and decide with my team.

Federer starts his bid for a sixth title against Frances Tiafoe. There is a chance that he could follow the footsteps of last year's finalists, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, who have also chose to end their season due to injury.

Leon Smith feels criticism of the timing of Andy Murray's withdrawal from the US Open is completely unfair.

Sam Querrey switches to Cilic's position with Philipp Kohlschreiber slotting in where Querrey was originally.

The world number three, who has won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2017, said he had recovered from the back complaint that forced him to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters earlier this month. I have been practising here and been competitive in practice when I'm not moving close to how I can when I'm healthy.

"This is actually why I didn't want to comment here...." "If it means I can play before the end of the year, then that's what I would love to do". "Did pretty much everything that I could to get myself ready here and took a number of weeks off after Wimbledon".
