Lawyers for Anthony Weiner Ask Judge for Leniency Ahead of Sentencing

In documents filed with a Manhattan federal court, Weiner's lawyers asked for probation mandating treatment and community service, portraying their client as an attention-driven "weak man" in a "self-destructive spiral" with a "sickness".

Anthony Weiner's attorneys argue in a Wednesday court filing that the disgraced lawmaker should not be sentenced to prison as a deterrent to future criminals because the public nature of his collapse should suffice.

"'Whatever else Anthony has done, he loves" their son, Abedin wrote of Weiner, who is a Jewish and who in May admitted to sending obscene material to a 15-year-old girl from his cellphone.

His lawyers also pinned blame on the girl, who they say told investigators she wanted to influence last year's Presidential election.

The case became mixed up in the investigation into the emails of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton when Mr Weiner's laptop was seized.

Weiner and Abedin also appeared in court together at a divorce hearing earlier in the day on Wednesday.

The New York Times reported that both Weiner and Abedin wrote separate letters to Judge Cote asking that the judge spare Weiner from a jail sentence. His lawyers have sought a prison term of 21 months to 27 months as part of a plea deal, "which isn't binding on the sentencing judge".

The girl, then 15, was "looking to generate material for a book the Government has disclosed she is now shopping to publishers", the memo says, stating that she was paid $30,000 in September 2016 to sell her story revealing Mr. Weiner's messages to the Daily Mail, a British tabloid.

The teenage victim, whose name has not been released since she is a minor, gave a television interview to Inside Edition detailing why she first reached out to Weiner via Twitter direct message in January 2016.

"This is not a letter I ever imagined I would write, but, with Anthony, I have repeatedly found myself in circumstances I never imagined".

Weiner himself apologized to her in a letter to the court. My continued acting out over years crushed the aspirations of my wife and ruined our marriage.

It said: 'I am devastated by Anthony's actions, and I understand he must face their consequences'. "I am so deeply sorry for the harm I have done to her, and I live with the sorrow that I will never be able to fix that".

During an investigation into Weiner's sexting with the underage girl, Comey testified later, the FBI discovered thousands of Clinton emails on Weiner's computer that were forwarded there by Abedin.

Clinton has said the announcement contributed to her upset loss to Republican Donald Trump, who had accused her of endangering national security by using the private server. Weiner ran for mayor of New York City in 2013, a bid scuttled by a similar sexting scandal.

Weiner mounted a comeback bid for NY mayor in 2013, but his prospects softened when a woman named Sydney Leathers revealed he sent her raunchy messages under the pseudonym "Carlos Danger".
