Scotland's dreams of qualifying for their first major global tournament since the 1998 World Cup were given a major shot in the arm following a dramatic 1-0 victory over Slovakia before a bonkers crowd at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

"He asked if I was OK and I told him to give me a minute and luckily it kind of eased off with the strapping on".

The former Scotland midfielder said: "Every win makes you feel better about yourself, and the performance makes you feel better about yourself".

The Scots scraped past 10-man Slovakia thanks to Martin Skrtel's last-minute own goal. "We're going to forget about Slovenia until this is over". It took us until very late in the game to beat them at Hampden in March.

"Maybe we were too focused, especially for about 10 minutes after the red card when we were a wee bit erratic".

While Scotland's qualifying campaign got off to a dire start, now they could finish second in Group F if they defeat Slovenia on Sunday. "In some areas we know where we want to evolve towards and some of that can happen before we go to Russian Federation".

"I've reiterated how important this game will be to the rest of the lads - but you've got to get a fine balance between making sure that we're calm and we believe in ourselves and we're not going over there going insane". "We still need to go to Slovenia and win, and even if we do that, we'll have a double-header against another team that's finished second in their group".

"We've put ourselves in a great position".

"If we keep that spirit together we'll have another good chance going into Sunday's game". I had big Chris Martin back in front of me heading one away at the end.

Amazingly, a trademark Griffiths free-kick a few moments later had the same result, crashing against the woodwork, while Dubravka made a sensational close-range save from Morrison's half volley from the home side's next attack. We had to move them about and try to tire Slovakia out. 'We didn't listen to all the negative things about us not getting to the play-offs.

"Sometimes you can sniff who's really ready to go again and the ones who're ready to go, but their body's maybe not at the maximum".
