Mother of Texas toddler found dead now facing charges

Wesley Mathews remains in jail on a felony injury to a child charge. In a story he would later change, Wesley originally told police Sherin disappeared overnight after he ordered her to stand outside at about 3 a.m. for not drinking her milk. Wesley Mathews later told police that his daughter, whom he'd adopted from India in June 2016, died while he was helping her drink her fortified milk, which she needed due to previously being malnourished.

"Richardson police Sergeant Kevin Perlich said the charge against Sini Mathews is, "...not necessarily related to her [Sherin's] death.

Sini, her husband, Wesley Mathews, and their biological daughter went out for dinner on October 6, the night before the toddler went missing, according to an affidavit issued by the Richardson police department. Wesley Mathews estimated that they left Sherin Mathews alone for approximately an hour-and-a-half.

Mitch Nolte, one of the attorney's representing Sini Matthews, told CBS 11 News that his client is afraid and upset, but is trying to keep it together for her surviving biological daughter. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet released the official cause of Sherin's death.

Sini Ann Mathews and husband Wesley Mathews, who was arrested last month, went out for dinner with their 3-year-old biological daughter October 6, the night before she was reported missing by her adoptive father. He's a Dallas native and a graduate of the University of North Texas.

But based on the investigation, police determined Sherin's mother and father left her home alone the night before she allegedly died. In an interview with detectives, Wesley Mathews claimed he left his daughter home alone after becoming frustrated with her for not drinking her milk.

She was reported missing the next day. He remains in the Richardson City Jail on a $1 million bond.

4 to 5 a.m.: Police said the Mathews family's maroon Acura was gone at that time and asked people in the area to check surveillance videos for the SUV. Sini Mathews "voluntarily complied without being coerced or threatened leaving Sherin Mathews home alone in the kitchen". That's when the girl started choking "and her breathing slowed", according to an arrest affidavit. The father later told police he did laundry and went inside to wait for her to return.

Sini Mathews was in court as recently as Monday asking for custody of the couple's child to be returned to her, but that hearing was rescheduled 1 p.m. November 29.
