Former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah has been elected Liberia's new president by a wide margin as the West African nation faces its first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years.
The White House called the vote "a major milestone for Liberia's democracy" while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres applauded "all Liberians for the successful completion of the elections process, which was conducted in a peaceful environment".
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated George Weah on his election as Liberia's next president.
"The President equally applauds the efforts of the National Election Commission of Liberia, as well as regional and worldwide observers who have contributed immensely to the electoral process and the strengthening of post-conflict democracy in the West African country".
He pledged Nigeria's readiness to work with Liberia on issues of mutual interest at bilateral, regional and global levels for the benefit of citizens of both countries.
Vice President Joseph Boakai concedes defeat to George Weah
George Weah will take over from Ellen Johnson, who ruled for 12 years. "All we are asking is for all Liberians to come together so we can build our country".
The 51-year-old who scored 22 goals in 60 appearances for his country played for the likes of AS Monaco, Paris Saint Germian, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City, Olympique Marseille and Al Jazeera.
Vice-President Joseph Boakai conceded on Friday, congratulating Weah. Macron invited him to visit, saying Weah had "a special place in the French's hearts".
Following a December 26 poll, Weah's Coalition for Democratic Change took 61.5 percent of the vote, beating Vice President Joseph Boakai's Unity Party, which got 38.5 percent. "Weah's presidency to (have a) pro-poor, pro-growth policy that will put the people at the centre of national development", said political analyst Vita Ishmael Tue. A Nobel Laureate, Johnson is credited with restoring peace after the civil war.
Pending declaration as President of Liberia where he will be sworn into office, the Professional football Association of Ghana have lauded the ex-AC Milan star. She led the country from back-to-back civil wars and saw it through a deadly Ebola outbreak that killed almost 5,000 Liberians but was criticized for not tackling corruption better.
