Government in talks with Congress over Triple Talaq Bill: Ananth Kumar

The bill criminalises instant triple talaq among Muslims. Minority welfare minister Tanveer Sait said the bill could be challenged legally.

On August 22 past year, the Supreme Court banned the practice of instant triple talaq, (the practice under which a Muslim man can divorce his wife by simply uttering the word "talaq" three times) calling it unconstitutional.

The Trinamul Congress, who remained mum during the debate in Lok Sabha did not say a word in the morning meeting.

Meanwhile, opposition parties including Congress met on Tuesday to discuss the strategy to be adopted on the Bill when it is taken up in the Upper House. The offence has been made cognizable and non- bailable.

Sources claimed that Opposition parties may avoid taking an individual stance vis-à-vis the triple talaq bill as it might send the wrong message at a time when the government has pitched it as a major step towards ensuring women's rights and empowerment. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill is listed for introduction in the Rajya Sabha by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on January 2, according to the list of business of the Upper House.

The amendments to the bill moved by the opposition too were rejected.

AIADMK and BJD had opposed the legislation in Lok Sabha.

"We want to know from the Congress leadership whether it is the party's stand".

The bill, which makes instant triple talaq illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband, was passed by the Lower House last week. Any Muslim woman subjected to instant talaq can approach a Court of Magistrate and seek redressal.
