HP Recalls Laptops Over Fire Risk

The batteries can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. There is a small utility you can download which will check if the battery in your laptop is one of the affected power packs.

Consumers are being asked to go to HP's website to find out if your model is affected, and install an update that will put the device in "battery safe mode" until it can be replaced.

The batteries, manufactured in China, were sold separately at Best Buy and other stores and authorized dealers nationwide and online at www.Amazon.com, www.hp.com and other websites for between $50 and $90.

The company received eight reports of these lithium-ion batteries overheating, melting, or charring, as well as one report of a minor injury caused by the malfunctioning batteries. "During the reboot process, an option will be presented to enable Battery Safety Mode". Additionally, they are providing a BIOS update that places the battery in "Battery Safety Mode" so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adaptor.
