White House pushes back against report of McMaster departure


The White House denied on Thursday night that it might replace national security advisor McMaster as early as the end of this month, in what would be the latest move in a long string of staff shake-ups and strained relations between McMaster and the president. Bolton has maintained what some have described as a positive personal relationship with President Donald Trump since the election but his hawkish views on issues like North Korea have made him a controversial pick to join the administration.

White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said Thursday that the Trump administration had no announcements regarding McMaster's possible departure from the White House, but stopped short of an outright denial of the report.

Trump lashed out at McMaster after the General said there was "incontrovertible" evidence that Russian Federation had interfered in the USA election.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis are reportedly handling the search for McMaster's replacement. "President Trump said that the NBC News story is 'fake news, ' and told McMaster that he is doing a great job".

Aides have discussed for some time an exit strategy for McMaster, who has clashed with Trump on policy matters, including Iran and Afghanistan strategy.
