Unbeaten over 5000m outdoors in 2017, Obiri finished fourth in 8:49.66, one place ahead of reigning U.S. indoor 1500m and 3000m champion Shelby Houlihan, who ran a strong last lap to finish fifth in 8:50.38, overhauling Ethiopia's Fantu Worku (8:50.54) and Klosterhalfen (8:51.79) in the final 200m.

After being denied a silver by Hassan, with many viewing Muir to have been impeded, the double European indoor gold medalist had the ideal opportunity for an alternative ending in the shorter distance in the Arena Birmingham.

Hassan trains as a member of the Nike Oregon Project.

Meanwhile Doyle - in the final after being upgraded in the semi-final following disqualifications - took her first individual world medal.

USA champion Shelby Houlihan, who trains with the Portland-based Bowerman Track Club, closed hard to take fifth in 8:50.38.

Since Portland, the Christchurch shot putter has grabbed the Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medal and won the World Outdoor Championships title in 2017.

Her team-mate Eilish McColgan came 10th in the 3,000m.

That is not to take anything from Doyle, however. "It's not my preferred event so to do this is incredible". "I tried for the silver but I'm over the moon given the calibre of athlete in that race". I went out hard which was the plan and I'm so pleased with the result.

Giles' 800m controversy arrived after what he described as a "gut-wrenching" fourth place in the 800m, where Poland's Adam Kszczot added a global gold to a litany of silvers both indoors and outdoors in the past.

Among those receiving their reallocated medals is Tianna Bartoletta of the United States of America, who was promoted to gold in the long jump for the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow. Britain's CJ Ujah was expected to challenge for a medal but blew it with a false start in his semi-final.
