"The prospect of the ever-vacillating, uninformed, impulsive and easily flattered Donald Trump negotiating anything important", Doggett said, "is a little scary".

So invitation accepted, right? What else should we expect from the casino-building tycoon? Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from IL, said she welcomed Trump's "embrace of diplomacy" even as she offered a strong warning.

A previous deal, the 1994 Agreed Framework, involved deliveries of fuel oil and the promise to build civilian nuclear reactors for North Korea.

Kim then called Trump a "lunatic and loser". Cha said the big question is what exactly the USA plans to concede in return.

"Something new is being tried but it's untested whether it's going to work".

Expect the North to suggest that Seoul demonstrate its commitment to inter-Korean solidarity in the coming weeks and offer a show of good faith in the lead-up to the summit that is scheduled to be held next month in the truce village of Panmunjom.

On the plus side, most observers had expected the opposite by now.

A senior State Department official said the talks would likely only be a preliminary discussion about holding future negotiations.

Later on, Rodman released a statement through his agent to the Washington Post, saying, "You're on the way to a historical meeting no United States president has ever done".

He was prepared for months before meeting Chairman Mao and had highly-skilled diplomats like Henry Kissinger working with him. For such a summit to maximise its chances of success would have required careful and painstaking back-channel diplomacy of the kind exemplified by Henry Kissinger before Richard Nixon made his historic visit to China in 1972. He also has far less time to prepare and, say observers, his team is woefully short of North Korean expertise.

First, he put on a Western-style suit to call for reconciliation with South Korea in his 2018 New Year's address. The front runner for the nomination was pulled at the last minute. It brings the North Korean regime close to its long-desired aim of recognition on the global stage, and offers Trump the tantalizing prospect of a historic diplomatic victory.

"He will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un at a place and time to be determined".

Sanders' comments Friday cast doubt on the President's much-ballyhooed agreement to meet the North Korean leader, with the White House appearing to impose new conditions that were not apparent a day earlier.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, in a statement Friday, also welcomed another summit planned for April between Kim and South Korea's president.

Now, in a head-snapping display of incoherence, Trump has agreed to meet Kim, giving the worst human-rights abuser on the planet what he most wants: worldwide legitimacy.

July 2017: Following another long range missile test, Mr Trump takes a measured approach, and accuses the country of isolating itself with the threatening lunches. "We have no idea about that at this point".

"It's risky, we've got to be properly prepared and we can not underestimate Kim Jong Un...."

Is he honest or cynically playing the President seeking concessions?

They act like it's Trump who is capitulating to Kim. Unfortunately, however, the North's nuclear arsenal has been written into the country's constitution - it is often referred to as a "treasured sword of justice" - and thus it is hard, if not impossible, to see the leadership giving it up.
