County unemployment rate up in January

Miami and Fulton counties had unemployment rates of 4 percent. Both have stayed in place since then.

The Palmetto State added 3,000 jobs in January in the manufacturing and trade, transportation, and utility sectors, though the statewide unemployment rate rose to 4.3 percent from last months' 4.2 percent, according to numbers from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. "With our sustained low unemployment, this is an ideal time for people who may have challenges to finding a job explore their options".

From January 2017 to January 2018, the work week grew slightly to 33.2 hours from 33.1 hours and average hourly earnings increased to $28.24 from $27.42.

According to a report issued Monday by the state Department of Labor, the number of unemployed job-seekers in ME declined by 2,500 over the past year to 21,000. It's the third lowest January unemployment rate since 1990.
