Palestinian official: Israel bans Gaza tire imports

Earlier in the day, hundreds of Palestinians had streamed to the five tent camps for what Hamas hoped would be the second mass protest in a week.

The latest deaths bring the total in the past week into the 20s. The border area appeared calm Saturday.

Israel has drawn sharp criticism for its open-fire orders along the border, including its warnings that those approaching or trying to damage the fence would be targeted.

Liz Throssell, a spokeswoman for the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, warned that, under worldwide law, firearms could be used only in cases of extreme necessity, as a last resort and in response to an imminent threat of death or risk of serious injury.

The following day, Israel's military said in a tweet that "Nothing was carried out uncontrolled; everything was accurate and measured, and we know where every bullet landed". "The circumstances in which journalists were allegedly hit by IDF fire are not familiar to the IDF, and are being looked into".

Gaza health ministry officials say 22 Palestinians have been killed over the past week, including 16 people involved in last Friday's protests. Footage showed that visibility was limited and the faces of some of the activists were covered with black soot. They were wounded after the Israeli forces fired at them who had gathered near the Israeli border in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The number of protesters on Friday was larger than in recent days, but lower than it was last Friday.

Shooting at Turkish university leaves 4 people dead; attacker arrested
Television pictures showed people gathering outside the university's main entrance while many ambulances were sent to the area. An Anadolu reporter told broadcaster CNN Turk the gunman had surrendered and did not try to escape.

But Palestinians say unarmed protesters were shot while posing no threat.

Hamas, a militant group sworn to Israel's destruction, gained legislative elections the next 12 months and in 2007 seized management of Gaza from the internationally acknowledged Palestinian Authority, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas.

Israel says its blockade is aimed exclusively at Hamas, and it has no quarrel with Gaza's civilians.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned in a radio interview on Thursday that Israel would respond harshly to any attempt to violate its security.

In February, a bomb planted near the border fence detonated under an Israeli patrol vehicle, prompting a large-scale Israeli aerial attack on Hamas targets in Gaza. "And that if there is unjustified and unlawful recourse to firearms, resulting in death, that may amount to a willful killing", Elizabeth Throssell said in Geneva. "Anyone who operates drones above IDF soldiers needs to understand he's putting himself in danger".

"We saw dozens of cases in which Hamas terrorists used ambulances, dressed up as Red Crescent workers, and dressed up as journalists", added Liberman.

"We stand in solidarity with the Israelis who have taken to the streets this last week to protest their government's actions", he said.
