Oregon Governor Will Defy Trump Request for National Guard to Mexican Border

Governors of border states are supporting the president's call to deploy National Guard troops along the U.S. -Mexico border.

But Brown said she will say "no" if Mr. Trump asks her to send members of the National Guard from her own state.

Trump signed a memo Wednesday providing for the deployment of National Guard members to the USA border with Mexico, but details have yet to be finalized, CNN reports, although today he estimated the number of troops needed at 2,000 to 4,000. Lonergan added that the governor "fully" supports the men and women of the New Mexico National Guard "in any mission - state or federal at home or overseas".

"This is just something that the president reeled off to distract from the problems he is facing in Washington, DC", she said.

If 4,000 troops were deployed, that would be about double the current USA military presence in Syria and about half as many as the number of U.S. troops in Iraq.

While Trump has the authority to deploy the troops, "it's not clear precisely what threat the administration is trying to address with a National Guard mobilization, "said Vox reporter Dara Lind".

Some governors from other states indicated they would resist any attempt to send National Guard troops from their states, if asked by the administration.

Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California - the four states bordering Mexico - will all have to agree on the level of troops they're willing to commit to the border, and the Defense Department will have to approve funding for the operation.

"These National Guard members will act in support of Border Patrol agents who are performing law enforcement duties", she added. Jerry Brown (D) on Thursday in hopes of getting his support.

"We'll probably keep them - or a large portion of them - until the wall is built", Trump said.

"We already have a fence that was established during the Bush administration that runs through the city", he said.

Trump - who "has long stoked a xenophobic fear of newcomers among his political base" - is acting because he wants to appease supporters frustrated by the lack of progress on his promised border wall, the paper said.

Trump's Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, said Wednesday that the troops would be necessary to secure the border.

Adding more National Guard troops for intelligence support will serve mainly to stop migrants who are slipping through undetected.

- From 2006 through 2008, President George W. Bush stationed 6,000 Guard members at the border, 2,400 of them in Arizona.

What Trump fails to realize, according to Newsweek, is that the president can not authorize the active military to carry out exercises on US soil without approval from Congress.

Officials in North Carolina said they have not received any requests to activate the state's troops to comply with the Trump White House's request.

"The National Guard mission limitations are based in part on concerns raised by both DOD and National Guard officials that civilians may not distinguish between Guardsmen and active duty military personnel in uniform, which may lead to the perception that the border is militarized", said the report.

"Texas will continue to implement robust border security efforts, and this partnership will help ensure we are doing everything we can to stem the flow of illegal immigration", he said.

Oregon National Guard troops are regularly deployed around the world.
