Canelo Alvarez receives drugs ban, new Gennady Golovkin rematch date planned

Golovkin, of course, was originally scheduled to take on Canelo Alvarez, but Alvarez failed multiple drug tests and has since been suspended for six months.

At a hearing on the subject during the commission's monthly meeting, the five-member committee unanimously approved an agreement reached beforehand to shorten the suspension from one year.

Now that Alvarez is suspended, Golovkin will now face Vanes Martirosyan on May 5 from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Alvarez blamed contaminated beef in Mexico for his positive test and vowed to plead his case before the commission.

"Although most professional sports, global anti-doping agencies and United States boxing commissions treat meat contamination differently from other positive tests, Nevada does not".

Normally boxers are hit with a one-year ban for using PEDs, but first-time offenders usually get six months.

Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO's) tested positive for trace amounts of the substance in random urine tests conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on February 17 and February 20 in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.

In a Tuesday, April 10 update, the CDC reports the outbreak had further reached the Midwest in OH and Pennsylvania. Illnesses began on dates ranging from March 22 to March 31, and those infected range in age from 12 to 84.

Golovkin had been due to fight Canelo Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 5, a re-run of their dramatic draw in September.

Alvarez had been a steady attraction in Las Vegas on the Cinco De Mayo weekend, and a consistent star on pay-per-view.

"Vanes Martirosyan is now the most important fight of my career". "He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level".

"Gennady is a proud champion of the IBF and, as a unified world champion, he looks forward to remaining champion for a long time and defending his middleweight titles many more times", Loeffler said.

Speaking via press release, Golovkin says that his concentration is now focused on Martirosyan.

Gennady Golovkin finally has an opponent for his May 5 fight.
