Lampard backs Gerrard to handle Rangers pressure

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been linked with the full-time post recently held by Mark Warburton, until February past year, and Pedro Caixinha, until October.

Appearing on BT Sport to analyse Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, Gerrard was asked point blank if there was truth in the rumours that he had held talks with Tangers - and he confirmed that this was, in fact, the case.

"I've held initial talks with Rangers and I plan to pick them up in a couple of days time".

Celtic claimed their seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title after a 5-0 thrashing of Old Firm rivals Rangers on Sunday.

Assistant coaches Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson are put in charge of the final three games of the season as Steven Gerrard emerges as the man Gers bosses want to lead them next season.

Together, they had delayed Jackson's confirmation hearing to allow the committee time to investigate. The White House continually defended Jackson as his nomination cratered on Capitol Hill this week.

He returned to Liverpool's academy last summer to take charge of the under-18 side but it seems likely that the 37-year-old is ready to step up to management at a big club.

"Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson have already started preparing the team for the match against Kilmarnock on Saturday and they will be in place for the two remaining fixtures, against Aberdeen and Hibernian".

Gerrard is poised to fill the now vacant managerial position at Rangers in Scotland.

Lampard feels that the time is right for Gerrard to quit Anfield and test himself north of the border, however, telling talkSPORT: "In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it's a great opportunity for him".

Speculation over Gerrard becoming the Rangers manager has been rife in recent days, with BBC Sport reporting on April 29 that the Gers were confident of appointing him.
