Offaly plane crash: Eyewitness says aircraft came down 'vertically' into bog

A man and a 7 year old boy are presumed dead after a light plane crash near Edenderry this Sunday afternoon, May 13.

A total of 16 parachutists made jumps from the plane before it came down in bog land on Sunday afternoon, killing the little boy and the experienced pilot.

Although initially believed to have been one of the parachutists who exited the plane in the minutes prior to the crash, gardaí later said he was in fact on the ground when the plane crashed.

All 16 jumped from the craft, however witnesses reported seeing the aircraft crash shortly afterwards. The bodies were recovered from the wreckage on Sunday...

The crash is the latest light aircraft tragedy to strike Ireland.

The plane was partially submerged in the bog.

"Then I heard a bad roaring and it went straight down like a torpedo", he said.

"When it hit the tree line the tail moved and I knew there was something wrong", he said.

"That roar will live with me for a while", he added. The site of the crash is located between Daingean and Edenderry, not far from Mount Lucas.

"People would be over there all the time, especially at weekends in the summer, a lot of people parachuting and a lot of fundraising jumpers", he said.

And this morning two engineers and a pilot from the Air Accident Investigation Unit will continues their inquiry in County Offaly.

"You hear planes up there every day but you never think something like this would happen", he said.

Local Councillor Martin O'Reilly of Sinn Féin said the community was shocked and saddened.
