India takes direct control in Kashmir after alliance ends

"State president Ravinder Raina, DyCM Kavinder Gupta and all BJP ministers including Ministers of States, and three other party leaders have been directed to reach Delhi immediately", the BJP insiders told Rising Kashmir.

The move came less than a year ahead of the 2019 general elections and a couple of months after the BJP had replaced its Deputy Chief Minister in the wake of outrage over Kathua rape incident. The Home Minister (Rajnath Singh) had made several visits to the state and the central government had also appointed an interlocutor in a honest attempt to resolve issues in Kashmir.

Informed sources told IANS that the decision to pull out from the Mehbooba Mufti-led government was taken after feedback from the RSS that the BJP was losing its sheen on the issue of nationalism in view of militants repeatedly targeting security forces personnel and also soldiers. She wanted it to continue, whereas given the security situation in the state, the BJP was not willing to continue with ceasefire.

"Terrorism, violence and radicalization have risen and fundamental rights of the citizens are under danger in the Valley", he said.

The Central government's priority is to ensure security for the Yatra, as militancy in South Kashmir has increased in recent months.

However, some people felt that an elected government was any day better than the Governor's rule. "Let those who are holding confabulations against the special status of the state become aware that the PDP isn't going to succumb to any pressure and it will keep fighting for people, their dignity and honour with strong will and courage", Alam said.

"Keeping in mind that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and in order to control the prevailing situation in the state, we have decided that the reins of power in the state be handed over to the governor", Madhav added. "We don't face any political interference".

On the other hand, Mehbooba said, "We did not form this alliance for power". We had expected a good response from the Hurriyat.
