"I have some really big news - the big news is that we are now a global community of a billion monthly actives on Instagram", said Instagram CEO Kevin Kevin Systrom at the start of the IGTV event.
After rumors which just would not die Instagram has today taken the wraps off of IGTV, a standalone app for smartphones which is aimed at providing a home for long-form, vertical videos.
There will be a stand-alone IGTV app, but the content will also be available on the existing Instagram app.
Instagram is touting IGTV as "a new app for watching long-form, vertical video from your favorite Instagram creators".
Simple and intuitive: It starts playing as soon as you open the app.
As for who can create content for IGTV, Instagram notes that "anyone can be a creator on IGTV and upload videos in the app or on the web". Once you do, you can post videos by clicking on your own profile avatar within IGTV.

She added: "I think there are a group of us who feel very strongly that Parliament must have a real say in all circumstances". Now the focus shifts to the price of the rebels' compliance, and it could be a high one for the beleaguered prime minister.
Speaking on stage today at the service's launch event, Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom reminisced about the good days-when Instagram wasn't so damn complicated. Users can follow different channels, and they swipe up to switch between the channels they follow as well as "for you" suggestions and "continue watching".
One-handed use of a smartphone is an important aspect, it's one of the reasons manufacturers are whittling down bezels - so they can offer more screen real estate in a device that's still easy to hold in one hand. Instagram doesn't now allow video ads, but Systrom said it eventually will.
IGTV is a separate tab within Instagram where users can post vertical, full-screen videos that are as long as 60 minutes.
IGTV is available on the App Store as a free download.
Hence, now to do so, the social network giant, of course, Facebook is releasing more ads and new ways simply to find sponsors. But, in IGTV, the creators are the channels. Instagram has always been a place to connect with the people who inspire, educate and entertain you every day. Video has been key for social media platforms to get users to spend more time engaged with their apps. He said that the entire community can use IGTV from the very start and hoped that it will bring people and things that matter even more closer. The blog also states that, according to a 2016 study by BCG, younger audiences prefer to spend time with amateur content creators instead of professionals.
