Over the weekend: North Korea talks backslide, Europe warns of tariff retaliation

The president sought to address growing doubts that Pyongyang is willing to take concrete steps toward dismantling its nuclear arsenal, the subject of last month's historic summit between Trump and Kim.

Pompeo's third trip to North Korea, which he has visited more than any other country during his tenure as secretary, was supposed to turn these promises into actual results.

Speaking privately, United States officials suggested the harshly-worded North Korean statement was a negotiating tactic.

5 - Pompeo has highlighted how much economic benefit Vietnam has seen by cooperating with the US and how North Korea could also follow suit.

"We agreed to the denuclearisation of North Korea", he wrote, despite the fact that the declaration signed by the two leaders refers to the denuclearisation of the "Korean peninsula" - a vague formula that leaves room for various interpretations. But he maintained that progress is being made.

"I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding", CNN global affairs analyst Joseph Yun, a former top US diplomat on North Korea policy.

The KCNA article read that the North expected the US would bring a "constructive proposal" meant to help build mutual trust, which the regime was planning to respond to by "doing something" that "corresponds with it".

It turns out common sense prevailed and Pompeo never actually presented the CD to Kim and instead returned it to Trump once he was back in the US.

He repeated that the United States would not push for any sanctions relief until after North Korea proved its nuclear program no longer existed and could not be rehabilitated.

"Their statement is typical North Korean negotiating style", Duyeon Kim, a visiting fellow at the Korean Peninsula Future Forum in Seoul, said in an email. "We know it is a real possibility because we see how Vietnam has traveled this remarkable path", Pompeo said.

"If those requests were gangster-like, the world is a gangster", Pompeo said Sunday after meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts in Tokyo. "The issues the USA side insisted on during the talks were the same cancerous ones that the past US administrations had insisted on", the North Korea's foreign ministry said.

Today President Trump said he is confident Kim will ultimately honor the contract they signed in Singapore, but is watching China's behavior behind the scenes.

In a speech on Sunday in Vietnam, Pompeo urged North Korea to follow the example of Vietnam, saying he believed Pyongyang could replicate Hanoi's path to normal relations with Washington and to prosperity.

Pompeo also highlighted that the economic sanctions now imposed on the North "will remain in place until final, fully verified denuclearization as agreed by Chairman Kim occurs".

Some North Korean media statements have suggested that "denuclearization" would require the complete removal of American assets from Asia, as the United States is a nuclear power.
